Real‑Life Travel Sleep Tips from a Pediatric Sleep Consultant (and Mom)
Our magical Disney trip which included lots of fun AND sleep!
By Stella Kontak, Certified Pediatric Sleep Consultant — stellar baby sleep
Family travel is magical, memory‑making, and… let’s be honest… a little chaotic. My family and I just got back from Disney, and while the trip was packed with fun, one of the biggest wins was that my girls slept well the entire time.
As a sleep consultant (and a mom!), I know travel sleep can make or break a vacation. So I’m sharing exactly what worked for us, the real-life, doable tips that helped keep everyone rested, regulated, and ready for the parks.
Here’s how you can set your family up for sleep success on your next trip, whether you’re heading to Disney, the beach, or Grandma’s house.
1. Prep Sleep Expectations Before You Leave
Talk about sleep before the trip. Kids do best when they know what to expect.
A few things we told our 4 year old:
“We’ll be sleeping in a new room, but it will still feel comfy.”
“We’ll keep our same bedtime routine.”
“We’re going to have sooo much fun, and sleep helps us enjoy it even more!”
Setting expectations = fewer battles and less resistance once you arrive.
2. Pack a Mini Sleep Toolkit (Here’s what ours looked like!)
Travel is unpredictable. Your sleep toolkit is your anchor.
Here’s what I packed:
SlumberPod (#1 travel essential)
White noise machine (non-negotiable!)
Favorite loveys or comfort items
Small bedtime books
Pajamas and sleep sack from home
These familiar cues help signal to your child’s brain: “It’s safe, and it’s time to sleep.”
This portable sound machine works SO well. You also can use it as a back up when you lose your electricity at home.
3. Honor Your Child’s Usual Routine, Loosely
You don’t need to follow the schedule 100%, but keep the order of your routine consistent:
Bath or wipe down
PJs
Milk
Books
Snuggles
Bed
Consistency in sequence matters way more than perfection in timing.
During our Disney trip, bedtime was often 30–60 minutes later which was totally fine because our routine stayed the same.
4. Protect Naps When You Can, But Don’t Stress When You Can’t
At Disney, naps often end up happening:
In the stroller
Not at all
And guess what? That’s okay.
Tip: If your child takes a stroller nap, try to keep it close to their normal nap window so overtiredness doesn’t snowball.
We did a mix of stroller naps and one “in-room reset” when the girls needed it. The portable sound machine worked wonders!
Truth: our little one fell asleep only once in the stroller but she was totally great all week!
5. Recreate Their Sleep Environment as Much as Possible
Kids sleep better when the room feels familiar.
When we arrived in our hotel room, we:
Set up the white noise
Found where the pack-and-play fit best
Organized their bedtime books
Took out their loveys
Within 20 minutes, the room felt like “home,” and the girls settled easily.
My daughter loves sleeping in her SlumberPod, makes it so much easier to share one room!
6. Build in Downtime
Stimulation overload = sleep sabotage.
We made sure to:
Leave the parks for a break
Had a resort pool day which helped preserve one day of full naps
Save at least one slow morning
Do early dinners
This kept everyone regulated and lowered meltdowns (kids AND adults 🙃).
7. Keep Bedtime Boundaries (Even on Vacation)
It’s tempting to loosen all the limits on vacation…but overtiredness will catch up quickly.
Our boundaries sounded like:
“It’s time for sleep now.”
“I’m right here if you need me.”
They don’t have to be rigid, just consistent and loving.
8. Give Yourself (and Your Kids) Grace
Travel sleep isn’t perfect, and it’s not meant to be. There may be wake-ups or short naps, and that’s normal.
Kids are adaptable. Once you're home, everything resets within a few days.
And remember: Sleep doesn’t have to be sacrificed for the sake of travel. With a few simple tools and realistic expectations, you can have magical days and restful nights.
