The #1 Mistake I See Parents Make (And It’s Ruining Their Child’s Sleep)
As a pediatric sleep consultant, and a mom of two little girls, there’s one mistake I see repeatedly.
It’s not inconsistent routines.
It’s not “bad sleepers.”
And it’s not even about sleep training.
It’s not making the room dark enough.
I know, this sounds almost too simple. But after working with countless families (and learning firsthand in my own home), I can confidently say:
A child’s sleep environment, especially darkness, can make or break their sleep.
And the biggest missing piece? Blackout curtains.
Why This Mistake Is So Common
Most parents are focused on the “big” things:
Bedtime routines
Nap schedules
Wake windows
Sleep training methods
And those absolutely matter.
But what I often see is a beautifully consistent routine… followed by putting a tired baby or toddler into a room that’s still filled with light.
Even small amounts of light—through blinds, around curtains, or from early sunrises—can disrupt your child’s ability to:
Fall asleep easily
Stay asleep
Sleep past dawn
And that leads to the exact struggles parents are trying to fix. I personally struggled with this with my first child. She was waking up early from naps and early morning wake ups were not fun. I then realized there was light peeking out from the top of her curtains and when I fixed that, she instantly had longer naps and no more early morning wake ups!
Why Darkness Matters More Than You Think
Your child’s body relies on melatonin, the hormone that helps them fall and stay asleep.
Here’s the key:
Darkness = melatonin increases
Light = melatonin decreases
That means even subtle light exposure can signal to your child’s brain:
“It’s time to wake up.”
This is especially true for babies and toddlers, whose internal clocks are still developing and are extra sensitive to light cues.
How Blackout Curtains Fix the Problem
1. They Prevent Early Morning Wake-Ups
Morning light is one of the biggest triggers for early rising.
Blackout curtains keep the room dark so your child’s body doesn’t get the signal to start the day at sunrise.
2. They Make Bedtime Easier (Especially in Summer)
When it’s still bright outside at 7:00 p.m., it’s confusing for young children.
A dark room helps reinforce:
“This is nighttime. It’s time for sleep.”
3. They Improve Nap Quality
Daytime sleep is naturally harder because of light.
A properly dark room:
Reduces stimulation
Helps children fall asleep faster (and when they wake up from their dreaded 30 min nap, the darkness helps them fall back asleep!)
Leads to longer, more restorative naps
4. They Support Deeper, More Restful Sleep
Light disruptions—even small ones—can pull children out of deep sleep cycles.
Darkness helps maintain consistent, uninterrupted sleep.
Not All “Blackout” Curtains Are Actually Blackout
This is another mistake I see: parents think they have blackout curtains… but light is still getting in. You want it PITCH BLACK in there.
Here’s why I love Sleepout Curtains. They are non toxic, 100% pitch black (they truly do not let any light in from the sides or top), and finally they look great in the room!
BONUS: They also have portable blackout curtains that you can use while travelling.
The Bottom Line
If you’re struggling with your child’s sleep or looking to improve, start here.
Not with another schedule tweak.
Not with another method.
Start with the environment.
Because the #1 mistake I see parents make is assuming sleep is all about what we do…When sometimes, it’s about what’s happening in the room.
Want better sleep starting today?
Take a look at your child’s room at:
Bedtime
Nap time
Early morning
If it’s not pitch dark, that’s your first step.
Because sometimes the biggest breakthrough comes from the simplest change.
